    Josef Markvart, Lubor Fridrich

An Instance of a Prosperous Town; An Interview with Miroslav Brýdl, the Mayor of Litomyšl

The East Bohemian town of Litomyšl, reminding most Czechs of their history classes, has some time ago attracted international attention by a meeting of seven Presidents of Middle European states. Mr Miroslav Brýdl has now been the town’s Mayor for almost three terms. During his „rule“, Litomyšl has achieved great results in the fields of economy, culture, and urban planning. The interview brings the Mayor’s answers to our questions on the background and pre-conditions of such a success.

Updating the Urban Planning Study of the Prague Preservation Area, by Alena Hořejší

In September 2000, the Update of the Urban Planning Study of the Prague Preservation Area was completed. Several important studies have previously been written on Prague’s historic centre, declared a Preservation Area in 1971 and registered as a UNESCO cultural heritage site in 1991. A spatial prognosis of the Area was being elaborated between 1978 and 1982 by the State Institute of Historic Towns and Buildings’ Reconstruction (SÚRPMO) and the Department of the Head Architect, and an urban planning study was started by a team of specialists in 1991, to be finished three years later. These studies have though never undergone any relevant discussion. Between 1985 and 1997, a decree of the main features of the Preservation Area’s development was in vigour, cancelled then without any alternative regulations to follow. Nowadays, for both the historic centre and the rest of the city, a 1:10,000 Master Plan is mandatory as authorized in 1999. However, a more detailed documentation has been urged as a prerequisite of such authorization. The Preservation Area consists of the historic conurbation of the formerly independent towns of Prague (Old Town, Lesser Quarter, Hradčany / the Castle, New Town, and Vyšehrad) encircled in communal ramparts.

Suburban Landscape Transformation, by Aleš Létal, Irena Smolová, Zdeněk Szczyrba

The aim of this article is to present the basic framework of the suburban landscape transformation of the last decade on a model example. The essential socio-economic and landscape-forming developments of the suburban area of Olomouc have been contemplated. Methodically, the outskirts of a housing zone of Olomouc and its bordering rural zone were chosen as the peripheral landscape to be taken into consideration.
